Filtering the Funk: Why Clean, Remineralized Water Is a Non-Negotiable in My Routine
We’ve all heard we should drink more water — but not all water is created equal. If you’re still sipping straight from the tap or relying on single-use plastic bottles, let’s talk about why I believe how you hydrate matters just as much as how much.
Why I Filter
Our water supply is treated with a long list of chemicals meant to “clean” it — but the truth is, many of those same chemicals end up in the water we drink. Think chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals… no thanks.
I use a Berkey gravity filter fitted with black carbon filters and fluoride filters to remove as many of these contaminants as possible. It’s a countertop setup, no electricity needed, and it gives me peace of mind knowing I’m drinking water that’s as clean and pure as I can get it.
But Wait — You Still Need Minerals
Here’s the catch: when you filter water this thoroughly, you’re also stripping out the minerals that naturally occur in spring or well water — the very minerals your body needs to hydrate at the cellular level.
That’s where remineralization comes in.
I do this with something called sole water, made by saturating natural mineral salt (I use Redmond Real Salt) in filtered water until it can’t absorb any more. You can find the full recipe on the Redmond blog here, but it’s super simple. Think of it as a mineral concentrate you can add to your drinking water daily.
How I Use It
Every morning, I fill a quart-size mason jar with my Berkey-filtered water and add 2–3 teaspoons of sole water. For any other jars I drink throughout the day, I’ll usually add just 1 teaspoon.
It’s an easy habit, and I feel the difference — better energy, fewer headaches and cramps, and no more feeling bloated after guzzling a ton of water. Real hydration doesn’t just mean more water… it means the right water.
Final Thoughts
In a world where we’re constantly bombarded by toxins, filtering and properly re-mineralizing my water is one of the simplest, most foundational ways I support my health. It’s a small ritual that helps me reconnect with nature, protect my body, and feel more like my vibrant self — one sip at a time.
